Why did you decide to work for Clearstream?

I decided to work for Clearstream because I wanted to gain experience as a software developer in the financial sector. Also, it was important for me to work in a rewarding environment – I found both at Clearstream.

Please describe your first working days at Clearstream.

At the beginning I was a little baffled with all the technologies that are used at Clearstream, e.g., the Citrix working environment.

What does your job entail?

My job involves the design and implementation of high quality software. I am responsible for providing my department with a good product in terms of reliability, performance and security.

Which similarities are there between your job here and what you study?

Pretty much everything, so I don’t have too many problems with the technical aspects of my job.

Please describe the working environment at Clearstream.

I think that there’s a good sense of team spirit. You have all kinds of different people that are very valuable to the company. In general, they all have a good sense of humour which doesn’t mean they lack seriousness in any way. To summarise, I work with people who know what they are doing and who have a pragmatic and progressive approach to their work without ignoring their human side.

What advice would you give to someone applying for a student job/internship at Clearstream?

My best advice is to be open-minded. You have colleagues from all over the world that might not be related to your fields of studies, which is great, because you get the opportunity not only to work for a top company but also to improve yourself as a professional and as a person.

How do you think applicants can best prepare for their job interview?

By knowing their CV, being honest and keeping it simple.

University: Nuremberg Institute of Technology Georg Simon Ohm

Degree/semester: International Business/ 5th semester

Interests: Sports, travelling, friends

Why did you decide to work for Clearstream?

My decision was based on the fact that I was interested in getting to know one of the largest exchange organisations with its diverse financial activities and its international orientation. Another reason was that I was keen to collect more experience in the field of finance, especially from a practical point of view, and working for Clearstream represented an excellent way to achieve this goal.

Please describe your first working days at Clearstream.

When I think back to my first days at Clearstream, I remember being integrated immediately on both a personal and professional level. On my first day I was welcomed and guided by an experienced intern, who helped me in the beginning with all the organisational things I needed and familiarised me with the customs of ‘The Square’, Clearstream’s headquarters in Luxembourg. After that my team took good care of me and provided me with an introduction to their work.

What does your job entail?

A big part of my responsibility is to assist the KYC (Know your Customer) review of new account opening applications to ensure that client documentation is in order and consistent. This includes for example the verification of the client’s identity and the sanctions screening of potential clients. The KYC policy of Clearstream is important for a number of reasons. The procedure helps to prevent any irregularities and avoid risks and fraud in financial transactions with customers. In addition, I support the team in various compliance-related tasks, such as helping prepare compliance trainings.

Which similarities are there between your job here and what you study?

One similarity that directly comes to my mind is, for example, the international atmosphere that is present at work or in my studies. The multiple languages that are spoken are another parallel.

Please describe the working environment at Clearstream.

The working atmosphere at Clearstream is very pleasant and cooperative. There is good communication between the departments as well as the offices located in other countries. Furthermore, as an intern, I am impressed by the horizontal hierarchy thinking and the attitude towards support.

What advice would you give to someone applying for a student job/internship at Clearstream?

You should not only think about whether you fit the company but, equally important, if the company fits you.

How do you think applicants can best prepare for their job interview?

You should try to find out an appropriate amount of information about the company and its activities. You should be able to formulate your strengths but, of course, also be aware of your weaknesses, and how you can overcome those. It will leave a positive impression if the interviewer not only interviews you, but you in return show your interest by asking questions. Another good tip is to be up to date with what is going on in the world of politics, economy and finance.
