Japan: Enhanced asset protection of links to Bank of Japan and Japan Securities Depository Center, Inc.
Clearstream Banking1 would like to inform its customers that effective
March 2022
assets currently custodised with it in Japan will be segregated from the assets of the custodian’s (the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, Tokyo Branch (HSBC)) other customers. This segregation will be achieved through dedicated accounts that Clearstream Banking has opened via HSBC at both Bank of Japan (BOJ) and Japan Securities Depository Center, Inc. (JASDEC). As a result of this account segregation at CSD level, Clearstream Banking will be able to provide enhanced asset protection of its Japanese link.
The effective dates of each of the transitions are as follows:
- 1 March 2022 for BOJ eligible securities
(Account Number at BOJ: 0411-7111) - 7 March 2022 for JASDEC eligible equities and convertible bonds
(Account Number at JASDEC: 00411-81) - 11 March 2022 for JASDEC eligible corporate bonds
(Account Number at JASDEC: 00411-91)
Impact on customers
There is no impact on customers or their counterparties as the Standard Settlement Instructions (SSI) and currently used procedures for domestic counterparties will remain unchanged (customers should refer to “Procedures for domestic counterparties” in Settlement Services - Japan Debt Securities and Settlement Services - Japanese Equities, ETFs and REITs for further information).
No further actions will be required as a result of this enhancement, including for the initial transition.
