Turkey: New national identification requirement for Turkish tax resident individuals

Clearstream Banking1 would like to inform customers that, effective

1 June 2018

the use of a Turkish national identity number (Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Kimlik Numarası) will become mandatory for customers settling Turkish securities held with Türk Ekonomi Bankası A.Ş. (depository code: 2T) in Clearstream Banking on behalf of beneficial owners that are Turkish tax resident individuals.

Clearstream Banking will continue to accept the current standard tax identification for beneficial owners that are not Turkish tax resident individuals.

Impact on customers

Settlement instructions received from customers on behalf of Turkish tax resident individuals will only be accepted by Clearstream Banking if the
11-digit Turkish national identity number is stated in each internal and external settlement instruction as follows:

Clearstream Banking will advise customers about the new Turkish national identification as follows:

  • Existing beneficial owners: Customers who already hold positions via Clearstream Banking on behalf of beneficial owners that are Turkish tax resident individuals will be notified proactively via SWIFT MT599 or registered letter (as applicable) with the Turkish national identity number for each of the underlying beneficial owners.
  • New beneficial owners: Customers requesting to register new beneficial owners in their books via Clearstream Banking will be notified of the Turkish national identity numbers for these beneficial owners via MT568 at the time of their registration request.
