Depository receipts

Depository receipts (DR) - negotiable (transferable) financial instruments issued by a bank to represent a foreign company's publicly-traded securities: either fixed income securities or equities. The depository receipt trades on a local stock exchange but a custodian bank in the foreign country holds the actual underlying securities. Depository receipts make it easier to invest in foreign companies and allow investors to hold shares in the equity of other countries.
